STATUS WITHIN THE HIERARCHY OF THE GOLDEN HORDE AS A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR OF POLITICAL COMPETITION BETWEEN THE PRINCES OF RUS
The fragmentary nature of historical sources that have survived to our time makes it necessary for researchers to resort to considering indirect signs for the identification and classification of the historical phenomena they are considering. One of such important, but not fully accounted for, phenomena was the belonging of several Rurikid princes to the «gurgan» class. In the second half of the 13th — first quarter of the 14th centuries, this narrow and privileged social stratum of the “sons-in-law of the Chingiz family” had a very high status in the Mongol Empire and the Golden Horde. Clarification of the real status of a number of russian princes makes it possible to more accurately understand the causes, course and logic of a number of historical events and processes. Two great Russian princes who left a prominent mark in history — Yaroslav Vsevolodovich and Fyodor Rostislavovich, apparently, along with the Moscow prince Yuri Danilovich, were among the most likely owners of the Horde status of «gurgan». Other Russian princes who during this period married women of Horde origin (we know Gleb Vasilkovich, Konstantin Borisovich and Fedor Mikhailovich), most likely, did not belong to this privileged category.
