ARMENIAN-IRANIAN POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC COOPERATION
AT THE TURN OF THE XX-XXI CENTURIES

The article is devoted to the analysis of the dynamics of development of Armenian-Iranian economic relations in the period from 1992 to 2018. Mutually beneficial relations in the economic and political spheres between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Armenia originated in the early 1990s. From the point of view of Iran, forced to exist under the conditions of sanctions pressure, Armenia is a potential corridor for the entry of Iranian goods to European markets. Iran, in turn, is seen as an important economic partner for Armenia in the complex realities of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The main directions of economic contacts between Iran and Armenia are analyzed. The important place of the energy sector in trade between countries was identified, in particular the importance of the Iran-Armenia gas pipeline. Iranian gas is supplied in exchange for the export of electricity from Armenia. It is energy that occupies an important place in economic contacts between states during the period under review. The tourism sphere as a prospective direction of development of Armenian-Iranian relations is considered separately. Difficulties hindering the growth of trade turnover between states are highlighted, influence of the sanctions regime on the development of trade relations between Iran and Armenia is considered. The impact of Armenia’s entry into the Eurasian Economic Union in 2015 on the expansion of Armenian-Iranian economic ties is analyzed.
