THE PROBLEM OF POWER IN THE POLITICAL PRACTICES OF THE «MONARCHISTS» AT THE BEGINNING OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION
The article deals with the group of “monarchists”, their convictions and influence in the revolutionary Assembly in 1789. Though committed to the political freedoms and social equality, this “party” strove for a compromise with the nobility by means of serious concessions to them. The “monarchists” tried to stop the quickly developing Revolution through creating an oligarchic upper chamber of the parliament and saving the leading role of the Crown which was to get the absolute veto right over the decrees of the deputy corps. The failure of these plans meant the loss of the political weight of the above mentioned group and, more importantly, led to transforming France in the short run from a real constitutional monarchy into a republic.
