MORMON COMMUNITY IN THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA IN THE XX-TH CENTURY
The article describes the development of the Mormon community in the Canadian province of Alberta during the ХХth century. Mormons, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had a great influence on the development of the Canadian West in the ХХth century. Migrants from the United States took part in the colonization of undeveloped territories, founded dozens of settlements in southern Alberta. Mormons were primarily engaged in farming on the Canadian prairies. Alberta has become a major center for livestock and the production of wheat, barley, canola, beets, and oats. In the second half of the ХХth century it has experienced a boom in the oil industry and has become one of Canada’s most populous regions. Historically, Alberta has been the main center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Canada. Many of the top church leaders came from this province. Alberta’s Mormons, despite conflicts associated with polygamy at the beginning of the ХХth century, eventually successfully integrated into the economic, cultural, and political life of Canadian society.
