DOMESTIC RUSSIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY OF GERMAN COLONIALISM IN AFRICA

The article presents a historiographical review of the works of Russian authors on the German contribution to African colonialism. Interest in the German specifics of this European phenomenon manifested itself in Russia immediately after the appearance of the Second Reich on the world stage. Having experienced all the vicissitudes peculiar to the domestic historical science of the twentieth century, having gone from ideologically conditioned research vectors to a civilizational approach and interdisciplinarity of historical search, domestic African studies expanded the field of research and, using new methodological approaches, deepened the analysis of the cultural and historical phenomenon — European colonialism in Africa. The paper attempts to analyze the main trends of the Russian historiography of German colonialism in chronological order. The scientific works of domestic Africanists, as well as applied works of officers, priests, teachers and politicians, one way or another affecting the «German-African» colonial theme, are considered. A brief critical assessment of these studies is given. The various approaches considered to the problem of European colonialism in Africa suggest the expansion of the field of scientific research, the possibility for which is provided by the interdisciplinarity of research and the involvement of new sources and methodological approaches, which include, for example, the study of images of the Black continent and its indigenous inhabitants from representatives of different social groups of the Second Reich.
