EDGAR JULIUS JUNG AS THE CREATOR OF FRANZ VON PAPEN’S MARBURG SPEECH: A PLATFORM OF CONSERVATIVE OPPOSITION TO NAZISM
The article analyzes the text of Frans von Papen’s speech, which the Chancellor delivered on June 17, 1934 in Marburg. This speech was a call for the revival of post-revolutionary Germany on the principles of Christianity, conservatism and aristocracy. Since Franz von Papen gave this speech, it was logically assumed that he was its main author. The real author is the leader of the “conservative revolution” Edgar Julius Jung, which is proven by analysis of the text. The speech in Marburg demonstrated that the political elite of Germany in the 30s was not in solidarity with the ideas of National Socialism. Franz von Papen and Edgar Julius Jung expressed concern about the methods used by Adolf Hitler. The content of this speech was a catalyst that accelerated the defeat of the political opposition and the elimination of the split within the NSDAP party, which went down in history as the «Night of the Long Knives». The first victim of the operation to eliminate anyone who disagreed with the party’s position was the author of this speech, Edgar Julius Jung. Thus, the Marbburg speech of Franz von Papen became another reason for the brutal reprisal of opposition to Nazism.
