‘OPPOSITIONALITY’ OF THE RUSSIAN PERIODICAL PRESS IN THE CONTEXT OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC CRISIS PERIOD OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR

The socio-economic crisis in Russia during the First World War, which predetermined the subsequent political perturbations, had many preconditions and reasons. The periodical press had its certain place in this process, which was able to form public sentiments that predetermined the support of the forces in opposition to the Russian authorities. However, until now, the Russian press in the Russian historiography is still subject to the assessments formed in the Soviet period, which strictly linked the level of opposition of the publication with its party or ideological orientation. The article proposes a correction of the Soviet classification of newspapers. It is demonstrated that at different stages of the First World War even pro-government newspapers were in opposition to the state power, and the publications of opposition parties, which supported patriotic discourse regarding the military aspirations of the state, critically assessed the ways of the Russian government in solving socio-economic problems. At the same time, the public mood in the country was determined by mass publications that often had no party affiliation and no clear ideological orientation, but whose pages reflected significant socio-economic problems relevant to various groups of the population.

Keywords: World War I, Russian press, opposition press, public sentiment.
