NATURAL SHURS AND IMAGES OF THE NATURAL SPIRITS IN THE SACRED LANDSCAPE OF THE TAZ AND TURUKHAN

The article is devoted to the study of the forgotten ancestral sanctuaries of the northern Selkups and separately the porg idols, which were part of these sanctuaries. The study aimed to reveal the former location of the places of birth sacrifices; based on the amount of information collected, give them the maximum possible description, and also consider how the porg idols preserved to this day and lost in the forest reflect the current state of the ethnic identity of the northern Selkups. The research was carried out on the basis of materials gleaned from the works of ethnographers and field materials of the author obtained during several expeditions to the Selkups. Description was used as the main research method, field work method, comparison and semantic analysis were also used. As a result of the research, «addresses» were found and descriptions of a significant number of forgotten ancestral sanctuaries were given; some details were added to the general description of the sanctuaries. It was concluded that the idols-porge, which have survived to this day and lost in the forest, terrify the Selkups, because the people still have a strong faith in spirits. This belief determines the «vitality» of the tradition and inhibits its transformation into new forms dictated by time. In the ranks of the Selkup intelligentsia, the process of forming a new, modern ethnicity is under way, but the people do not support it, for most of the Selkups the old traditions are still relevant.

Key words: northern Selkups, sacral landscape, ancestral sanctuaries, images of porge idols, ethnic identity.
