MOB VIOLENCE IN THE SUMMER OF 1789 IN THE PERCEPTION
OF THE MEMBERS OF FRANCE’S CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY

A difficult problem the Constituent Assembly of the revolutionary France faced was the need to control the violent mob. The opinions of the legislators were divided. Some suggested measures to prevent manifestations of extremism. Others feared that countering the extrajudicial executions would undermine the Assembly’s close relationship with the popular movement and turned a blind eye to them. Still others sought the rapid construction of new authorities, which would keep the situation under control. The result was a “toothless” appeal that did not contribute to the solution of the problem. The large-scale unrest which unfolded soon forced the deputies to return to solving it.
