THE PAVEL AND SERGEI TRETYAKOV CITY GALLERY IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XIX – EARLY XX CENTURIES IN THE CONTEXT OF MEMORIAL STUDIES
In the second half of the XIX century, many large Russian museums were opened to the public. In this regard it’s important to trace the formation of their role in society and the impact on cultural memory. The article examines the expositions of the Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov City Gallery in the second half of the XIX – early XX centuries from the point of view of their influence on the formation of cultural memory and historical perceptions of Russian society. As part of the study, the works of art exhibited in the halls of the Gallery were selected and distributed according to historical eras that they reflect: Biblical and Early Christian history, Antiquity (before 476), the Domestic Middle Ages (Pre-Petrine Russia, before 1682), the Foreign Middle Ages (476-1500), the Foreign History of Modern Times (1500-1855), New Russia (1682-1855) and Modernity (since 1855). Within the framework of this approach, the author identified the most popular heroes and events of history reflected in the Tretyakov Gallery expositions, analyzed the images in which they were shown through works of art, and also determined the share of each epoch in the information space of museum and their changes over time. As this article shows, the Tretyakov Gallery created a new visual image of national history, reflecting the order of the society of post-reform Russia, in which the people and the «progressive» intelligentsia played a leading role, and not monarchs and generals.
