MIGRATION OF AMERICAN «LATTER-DAY SAINTS» TO WESTERN CANADA AT THE TURN OF THE XIX-TH AND XX-TH CENTURIES

The article is devoted to the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the USA and Canada. This problem is investigated for the first time in Russian historiography, based on Canadian and American documents, hitherto not included in scientific circulation. Of particular importance are printed local history sources and statistics. The topic remains under-researched in the Canadian historical scholarship. As a rule, foreign historians have studied biographies of prominent figures of the Mormon Church in Canada, the issue of polygamy and wrote historical essays on the city and county of Cardston. But a complete picture of immigration of the Mormons from the United States and Europe for the Canadian West and their mastering a long time was not presented. An example of such a study is the collective monograph «The Mormon Presence in Canada», edited by B.Y. Card, published in 1990. This work allows us to fill the gap in historical science.

Keywords: history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Mormon immigration to Canada, Mormon exploration of Western Canada, Mormon polygamy, the development of agriculture and industry in Alberta in the late XIX – early XX centuries.
